Storing clothes in humid weather
In the monsoon months, moisture is the main enemy of a wardrobe. Musty smells and grey mildew spots both start with clothes that were stored slightly damp.
Dry completely first
Never put away anything that feels even a little damp, including clothes that were worn in the rain. Let them air fully, in moving air if the weather does not allow sun.
Give clothes space
A tightly packed cupboard traps moisture. Leave some room between hangers and avoid pushing stacks against the back wall.
Absorb the moisture
Place silica gel sachets or a moisture-absorbing box on the shelves and replace them when they are saturated. Open the cupboard doors for an hour on dry days.
Choose the right covers
Use cotton garment bags, not plastic. Plastic holds moisture in against the fabric.
Look after leather and shoes
Wipe them dry, stuff shoes with paper so they hold their shape, and keep them off the floor.
If mildew appears
Brush the spots off outdoors, wash the piece according to its label and dry it in the sun if the fabric allows. Clean the shelf before putting anything back.
